Techniques

Match on action

Match on action is an editing technique, which is commonly used to show continuity in a scene. It is used to show an action sequence from different angles and so this editing technique often uses more than one camera shot. A simple example is a man walking up to a safe and reaching for the lock.

Shot reverse shot

A shot reverse shot is frequently used in editing to show a conversation between two characters. One character is shown looking or talking to another character that is usually off screen.  Then the other character is then shown looking back at the first character.

180 Degree rule

The 180-degree rule is a basic film editing guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other.
